CHEATHAM, HENRY P. An alumnus of Shaw College, Henry P. Cheatham (1857-1935) served as United States Congressman from North Carolina between 1889-93. Preceding his congressional career, Cheatham was Register of Deeds for Vance County, North Carolina (1884-88) and principal of the State Normal School at Plymouth (1888). His later years were spent as superintendent of a black orphanage in North Carolina, a position he held from 1901 until his death in 1935.
